    Nutrition Awareness

    This course looks at the importance of nutrition in social care settings. It covers the five nutrition groups, daily recommendations and the links between good nutrition and disease prevention. Included is influence of belief, culture and religion on an individual’s diet as well as useful information for carers regarding nutritional standards and guidelines.

    This course is mapped to the Care Certificate and the Health and Social Care Diploma Level 2.

    Learning outcome

    • Know dietary needs of individuals at different life stages
    • Understand the importance of good nutrition
    • Know the importance of nutrition and hydration for adults in care
    • Know how good nutrition can reduce the risk of certain diseases
    • Understand how certain changes in diet can prevent certain diseases
    • Understand effects of unbalanced diets on the health of individuals
    • Understand the varying dietary requirements of a variety of medical conditions
    • Be aware of specific dietary needs of service users based on beliefs, cultural and religious beliefs
    • Recognise best practice in the area of nutrition
    • Know what reports and key publications are available to consult regarding nutrition.
    Target audience Individuals who are involved in the preparation of meals for others who have specific nutritional needs.
