    This course will provide an awareness of how medicine is received and administered in a domiciliary care environment. It will provide the user with underpinning knowledge for competency in how to work safely with medication to meet the health and social care regulations.  

    This course does not, however, certify an individual to administer medicine.  Learners are advised to refer to their local policy. 

    Learning outcome: 

    • Understand the roles and responsibilities in medication management in a domiciliary care setting 
    • Be aware of data protection regulations regarding personal information 
    • Be familiar with the common types of medication and their use 
    • Understand the procedure to receive, store and dispose of medication supplies safely
    • Be familiar with the details of a dispensing medication label 
    • Be familiar with the details of a prescription form 
    • Be aware of the main routes to administer medication 
    • Understand how medication is administered safely 
    • Be familiar with recording and reporting on use of medication 
    • Be aware of how to promote the rights of the individual when managing medication 
    • Understand how risk assessment can be used to promote an individual's independence in managing medication
    • Know that medication can cause undesired effects
    • Understand the conditions for the safe and secure storage of medicines 
    • Understand the legislative framework for the use of medication in domiciliary care settings
